The Hunting Trip of a Lifetime

A Day in the Hunt – Day Break

Starting the Adventure

For the early riser up at the crack of dawn, there are countless places around Paul Nelson Farm to peacefully watch the morning come to life. Our sunrise and the sounds of the farm will jump-start your senses and your energy for the day ahead.  Take an early-morning stroll outdoors soaking up the sights and sounds of the endless South Dakota Prairie vistas.

Continental breakfast will be awaiting you in the Main Lodge until 8:30. Simply grab a cup of fresh hot coffee and relax by the fireplace, get some business done in a conference room, or relax in the library as you anticipate the day ahead.

Professional shooting instruction is offered by the Sporting Clays Barn at 8:00am for those who desire to dial in their shot. Get a tip or two from our instructor or enjoy some practice on your own; the choice is yours.

A day in the hunt – 9:00AM

Hot Breakfast

Continental breakfast has now been replaced by a fresh hot breakfast served in the Main Lodge. Whether it is piping hot homemade biscuits and gravy, fresh sausage patties, pancakes or eggs, there is surely something your stomach will crave. Oatmeal, grits, fresh fruits and juices are also available in addition to premium coffee. Join your group at your private table and enjoy the food and friendship as you anticipate your day ahead.

Before your first hunt, you’ll take in a short safety briefing and video in the theatre room prior to departing for your memorable and safe hunt.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — 10:00AM

The Morning Hunt

Finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for.

Load up and meet your guides and their eager bird dogs in the comfort of their trailer. At Paul Nelson Farm, you hunt only with your own group. The fields are yours.

Within minutes, you’ll be walking the line, waiting for your seasoned guide to call, “Rooster!” as brilliantly colored pheasants and chukar burst from the sky.

This is your life for the next three hours.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — 1:00PM

Lunch at PNF

Following your successful morning hunt, there’s no doubt you’ve worked up an appetite. Your group will be treated to a delicious lunch back at the Main Lodge. Mmm! Mmm! Wonder what’s for lunch today?

This time is set aside for our guests to catch up on calls and emails that they may have missed during the morning hunt, do some quick bass fishing in Paul’s Pond, if desired or simply relax in your private room or one of our many executive lounges.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — 2:30PM

Afternoon Hunt

After being well fed and a brief rest, it’s time for an unforgettable experience and an unrivaled afternoon of wing shooting in the heart of pheasant country. The next 3 hours will erupt much like the morning and the time will pass with incredible speed as you raise your gun to the sky for more wing shooting shared with friends and creating lifelong memories.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — 6:15PM

Conversation and Cocktails

Great conversation will be in full gear and memorable moments will be shared. Relive the events of the day in front of the fireplace or by one of our outdoor fire pits or the balcony of one of our lodges watching an amazing South Dakota sunset. Hot hors d’oeuvres will be served for your group’s enjoyment including pheasant prepared in many different ways, jumbo shrimp, and specialty dips. Cocktails are available at each of our eight fully stocked bars, and it is likely a sporting event will be playing on the TVs.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — 7:15PM

Dinner

Nothing can bring a group together like Dinner – truly a time to enjoy your group at their own table. Whether the evening menu is mouth-watering Prime rib, pheasant & wild rice, pork chops or Paul’s prime steaks, we are certain this will be a time to celebrate and remember the day and the people together. 90+ point bottles of wine, premium homemade meals, friendly conversation, a tasty dessert, and an after-dinner drink will make for a memorable feast. And on that lucky evening, the sound of Cheryl on the harp will bring the room to life with an ambiance unsurpassed at Paul Nelson Farm.

A DAY IN THE HUNT — Night Cap

Lounge Around The Lodge

By this time of the day, most of our guests are looking for a comfortable chair in front of the fireplace, watching a game on the movie theater screen, socializing with table shuffleboard and drinks in one of our lounges or enjoying a cigar in one of our designated poker/smoker rooms… Could there be a better way to end a day with close friends and associates?

And when you have finally reached the end of your day, lumber into your own private room. Your plush bed and linens will help provide a quiet night on the prairie with un-interrupted sleep finding you rejuvenated in the morning with the fact that you get to do it all again!

The gold standard of pheasant hunting

Paul Nelson Farm delivers a world class pheasant hunt at a level you won’t find anywhere else. More than 8,000 acres of prime South Dakota pheasant country deliver an unrivaled bird count and the kind of experience serious hunters dream of. You’ll hunt exclusively with your own group, whether that’s family, friends, or associates, giving you a private experience that starts the moment you arrive.

As Tom Brokaw said, these are the kinds of days you hope will never end, and for a place honored twice as an Orvis Lodge of the Year, that’s exactly what you should expect.

8,000 Acres of Prime Hunting Land

“This is some of the most beautiful hunting land I have ever seen.”
— Ken Allen

An experience built around you

Paul Nelson Farm delivers an amazing hunt regardless of season. Come in the fall and you’ll find classic South Dakota pheasant country with steady action across more than 8,000 acres. Arrive in the colder months and late season birds bring a different kind of challenge and reward. No matter when you’re here, your time on this land builds relationships through shared experience.

For those who mix business with the hunt, this is a place built to make that time count. Clients, colleagues, and associates have room to meet, relax, and spend real time together without the usual distractions pulling them away. The conversations are easier, the days are fuller, and the connections formed here last well beyond the hunt itself.
